Best Movies of Summer 2014

Summer kind of sucks as an adult. It’s not like you have any time off and it’s just hot.  One of my favorite parts of summer is definitely the movies. I could go to the movies three nights a week and my life would be better for it. However, this summer I was overall disappointed with what Hollywood had to offer.  Also, I really don’t know why I keep using My Little Pony gifs as my featured images. I don’t even watch the show… they are just SO cute. That being said, here are my top five favorite summer movies of 2014.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Guardians of the Galaxy is the quintessential summer movie. I love Marvel already but this film just took them to a whole new level for me. I loved the space aspect and all the “inside jokes” about humanity. Groot and Rocket were perfection and I surprisingly even loved Chris Pratt. The 80’s soundtrack was oddly enough a perfect compliment to this futuristic world. I had my friend who doesn’t like superhero movies see it with me and she even loved it! I really don’t have anything bad to say about this movie other than the villain was kind of lame (Sorry, Lee Pace. You’re still cute). If you haven’t seen this movie yet, do yourself a favor and go see it before it leaves theaters.

GODZILLA

I LOVE MONSTERS… A LOT. Godzilla is, and rightly so, referred to as the King of Monsters and is all around awesome. This movie was the perfect kick off to summer films. I can’t even put into words how perfect he looked. If you want to see a spot on review, watch this. Yeah, the story wasn’t the best and we don’t get to see Godzilla nearly enough but my hope is that they will make a second film and show him off a bit more. Honestly, this might just be the first movie I ever buy in Blu-Ray 3D because of how much I loved the graphics in the last 45 minutes of the film. I almost did for Pacific Rim but ended up holding out.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

Believe it or not, How to Train Your Dragon 2 is even better than the original. It’s commonly known that this is something that rarely ever happens in animated films, but HTYD 2 accomplishes just that. I love a good animated film and this is by far the best of the summer. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it was an overall good time. It is the perfect family film for summer 2014.

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

If it were any other summer this movie probably wouldn’t have made my list. However, as far as big blockbusters go this summer was lacking. I did thoroughly enjoy this movie and it definitely hit me in the feels. I cried. A lot. It was slightly uncomfortable in such a packed movie theater and my face looked like a splotchy tomato by the time we were through but that’s not a bad thing, right?

MALEFICENT

Maleficent1

Let me just start off by getting the fact that the male actors in this movie sucked out of the way. They were terrible… and I mean TERRIBLE. However, Angelina Jolie was out-of-this-world, spot-on-amazing as Maleficent. This movie did exactly what I was hoping it would do. This gif says it all. Just look at her.  I love complex characters and I commend Disney for recently exploring the complexities with their villains. Also, the bit with her daughter is the cutest thing ever. The graphics were great and over all this movie was just extremely enjoyable for me. Sleeping Beauty is my favorite classic princess story so I have a natural bias but if you haven’t seen it I definitely recommend it.

I hope you enjoyed my list and please let me know in the comments section what your favorite movies were this summer. Have a great day!
